Keeping your job after vision loss
Losing some or all of your vision doesn’t mean losing your job.
We understand how uncertain you can feel about the future when your vision starts to change – especially if you’re already established in your career. Many people worry about how they’ll keep up at work, whether they’ll be seen as capable or if they’ll need to give up a job they love.
The truth is: with the right support and tools, there's absolutely no reason you can’t keep working – and thriving – in your chosen career.
Vision Australia works with people every day who have recently lost their vision or are experiencing progressive sight loss. As such, our team is expertly positioned to support you to adapt, regain confidence and continue to excel in your role.
By understanding your personal needs, we can create a tailored support plan that focuses on your strengths, goals and what you need to stay productive and confident at work.
Workplace assessments and adjustments
When you engage Vision Australia’s employment team, our specialists will start by getting to know your job, your work environment and what challenges you’re facing due to changes in your vision.
We can visit your workplace (or work with you remotely) to identify simple changes that can make your job easier and safer.
This might include:
- lighting and workstation adjustments
- access to printed or digital materials
- communication strategies with your team.
We’ll also liaise with your employer to ensure adjustments are reasonable, practical, and in line with your rights.
Assistive technology training
Our specialists can assess your workplace and recommend technology to make your job accessible – whether you’re using a computer, working out in the community or managing a team.
We provide support with:
- screen readers and magnification software
- accessible smartphone and tablet tools
- speech-to-text and text-to-speech tools
- adaptive equipment for your specific job tasks
- training for you and your employer on how to use these tools effectively.
Wellbeing support
Vision loss doesn’t just affect your eyes – it can impact your confidence, mental health and professional relationships.
We offer specialist wellbeing support alongside our employment services, because staying in work is about more than just tools and tasks – it’s also about feeling supported and understood.
Our wellbeing services include:
- one-on-one counselling with professionals who understand vision loss
- peer support groups and lived experience mentoring.
We’ll help you navigate the emotional side of vision change, so you can feel more confident at work – and in life.
Ongoing support, when you need it
Your needs might change over time. Whether it’s checking in after a new tech rollout, responding to a change in your vision or helping you plan for future roles, our employment specialists are only ever a phone call away.
