Working alongside the blindness and low vision community and sector, we have achieved many great wins.
Accessible formats
National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants can now request for their plans to be provided in accessible formats.
Tactile currency
The $5 and $10 banknote now includes a tactile feature, making it simple for people who are blind or vision impaired to identify this currency. We are working towards making sure every banknote is accessible in the near future.
Improving the NDIS
Through lobbying we have made sure essential items that people who are blind or have low vision need are part of the NDIS.
Adequate funding for transport
Alongside other disability organisations, we successfully blocked a Bill that would have reduced transport support for people with disability.
We have secured extended funding for Queensland NDIS participants who rely on the Taxi Subsidy Scheme, an initiative which subsidies the cost of taxi fares.
Copyright laws
Australians who are blind or have low vision are the first in the world to benefit from the Marrakesh Treaty, an international agreement to share accessible documents across borders.
The treaty allows organisations like Vision Australia to share books with people who rely on accessible formats as well as international exchange of books between organisations, without having to ask permission from the rights-holders.
