Last night, legislation that provides for 0.5 percentage point increase in the Medicare levy to help fund DisabilityCare Australia (formerly known as the National Disability Insurance Scheme) passed the House of Representatives.
The legislation will increase the Medicare levy from 1.5 to 2% of taxable income from July 1, 2014 and is expected to raise $20.4 billion over four years, with every cent raised to be put towards funding DisabilityCare Australia.
Now that the legislation has been passed by the House of Representatives, it will go to the Senate.
When the full scheme is rolled out nationally in 2019-20 around 460,000 Australians with significant and permanent disability will get the support they deserve.
