15 October 2012
As part of International White Cane Day being held today, blindness services have participated in a number of significant activities and events across the nation that demonstrate renewed strength and unity in the sector.
Major activities today have included:
- This afternoon, Vision 2020 Australia issued a media release that has the backing of 17 major blindness and health agencies from across Australia - urging the government to ensure the National Disability Insurance Scheme provides adequately for Australians who are blind or have low vision. It is also seeking a roundtable forum with the Minister Jenny Macklin to discuss a submission from the Vision 2020 Australia Low Vision and Rehabilitation Committee. The submission also contains 33 case studies that show why access to NDIS services is so important.
- Earlier this morning in Canberra, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT presented a petition to Federal Minister for Disability Reform Jenny Macklin MP as part of their 'NDIS - A Vision for all' campaign. More than 19,000 signatures were gathered from across NSW as part of their annual Gulliver Guide Dog tour. More information at http://www.visionloss.org.au/
- Vision Australia's Maryanne Diamond has been published in newspapers and online across the country including the Sydney Morning Herald and Sun Herald, drawing attention to International White Cane Day October 15 as an opportunity to recognise the impact this tool has had, in enabling independence for Australians who are blind. Maryanne urged readers to think about how they can help ensure people feel safe walking around in the community.
- Vision Australia has also continued to meet with and talk to decision makers on the NDIS to ensure they consider the needs of people such as Lucy - our online hero. Lucy continues her campaign - and stay tuned for some exciting news.
- Blind Citizens Australia have been continuing with its State Conventions and activity relating to the NDIS. For more information visit http://www.bca.org.au/
