For the first time, thousands of Australians who are blind or have low vision will get increased enjoyment from watching television thanks to a trial of audio description on ABC Television.
Vision Australia, the nation's leading provider of blindness and low vision services, warmly welcomes today's announcement, by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy.
"This decision is a step forward in terms of creating equal access to television for Australians who are blind or have low vision," said Ms. Maryanne Diamond, General Manager International and Stakeholder Relations, Vision Australia.
Audio description is the narration of visual aspects of movies, live theatre performances, tours and DVDs. It fills in the gaps in the dialogue and helps bring entertainment to life for people who are blind or have low vision.
