Vision Australia is pleased to announce the availability of a range of new computer training courses to enable people who are blind or have low vision to independently use a computer - an important tool in today’s world.
We aim to offer a variety of flexible computer training courses in a range of screen reader and magnifier programs. Students can either attend a class run by one of our Adaptive Technology Trainers at one of our centres or participate via distance learning.
Which topics and programs are covered?
These courses are designed to train people to understand and use all aspects of the Windows 7 environment and to operate it using the keyboard only. The key combinations can be a challenge to remember so the training materials feature a lot of repetition and exercises to help recall. Clients have already started using them and the feedback is very positive.
Students start with our Operate a Personal Computer course with any of the following adaptive technologies: NVDA (a free and Australian-made screen reader), JAWS screen reader, MAGic or ZoomText screen magnifiers. From here, you can then take up using the internet, email or Microsoft Word 2007. These latter courses are with either JAWS or Keystrokes. The Keystrokes versions allow you to use the internet, email or Word with any screen reader or magnifier you choose.
