This month, we explore how AI is reshaping everyday independence – from sightseeing and shopping to catching up on a missed audiobook ending.

"AI mirrors": a new way to check your reflection independently

For many people, glancing in a mirror is second nature – but for blind and low vision users, that moment often relies on other people. New “AI mirror” apps aim to change that.

These apps can provide people who are blind with feedback and even advice on their appearance – from their makeup and outfit to their hair and face shape. By doing this, these apps are changing the way users see themselves.

However, in addition to the benefits of these apps, this technology could have negative effects as well, and research is currently being conducted into the impact these apps may have on body image.

VIP Tour: Exploring new places with confidence using AI

There are many benefits to travelling and spending time in nature; however, exploring unfamiliar environments can feel daunting for people who are blind or have low vision – even with navigation aids.

Using AI-driven audio and tactile interaction, VIP Tour allows users to independently explore and better understand the world around them.

Hands-free navigation: OOrion now works with Meta Glasses

OOrion is an app that allows people who are blind or have low vision to navigate their home and public environments more easily.

For example, the app can direct users to the location of a specific item, like a jar of vegemite in the kitchen cupboard or the TV remote on the bench.

You can now use the OOrion AI app via Meta's AI glasses, allowing hands-free access to all of OOrion’s features.

Spotlight of the month: InnoSearch AI shopping app

After a long wait, InnoSearch’s mobile app has finally launched – giving users faster, more convenient access to accessible shopping on the go.

InnoSearch is an AI-powered platform designed to make online shopping more accessible for blind and low vision users.

It provides a user-friendly interface that simplifies the shopping experience by offering detailed product descriptions and easy navigation across a wide range of retailers.

Until recently, you could only access InnoSearch via their webpage, but their long-awaited mobile app – which is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play – now gives users faster, more accessible ways to use InnoSearch.

AI fails: When AI goes wrong

When AI is caught sleeping: ChatGPT took a coffee break

Even the smartest AI has an off day...

When ChatGPT had a recent server outage, their press release apologised and reported the following:

From a PR standpoint, this could have been a disaster. Headlines like “ChatGPT Down – Chaos Ensues!” practically write themselves.

Businesses and students alike might have been caught mid-project. Maybe even someone needed a joke for an awkward holiday party.

To all of you, from OpenAI: our sincerest apologies. We hope you can forgive us. Let’s chalk it up to character-building.

Readers stories

Ron catches the ending he missed

Ron loves listening to audiobooks on his Envoy Connect – but like many of us, he sometimes falls asleep before the final chapter.

Instead of fast forwarding to find his place again, he used his Ray-Ban Meta glasses to ask for a quick summary of the ending, asking “Hey Meta, give me a summary of the ending of the book, Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch”.

Ron shared how this simple use of AI saved time and made it easier to keep enjoying his favourite books.
