Talking Vision is Vision Australia Radio’s flagship program, discussing the latest news and issues from a blindness and low vision perspective.
This week on Talking Vision we celebrate mums around the country as Sam catches up with Deena, who has two young daughters.
Deena and husband Thomas are both blind, but neither of them had any reservations about becoming parents.
“I always knew I wanted to be a mum, so that was never a question of deciding whether I would have children or not. I knew of other parents who were blind, so I knew it was possible,” Deena said.
To prepare for motherhood Deena benefitted from Vision Australia’s Telelink parent group, as well as occupational therapy sessions. The sessions helped Deena with the practical challenges of being a parent of young children, such as feeding and changing nappies, as well as tips and life hacks for around the house like tactile markings on drawers or soft surfaces in the living room.
“I think it’s important to find a network of people around you, whether it’s informal or formal support, because it can be quite isolating. It’s not a bad thing to ask for help, and there are so many services out there that can help, but it’s just about knowing where to find them,” she said.
