Vision Australia’s Career Start program was created to equip blind and low vision graduates with skills and experience for the workforce.
Since 2015, participants have put their qualifications into practice, building up their professional networks, and for many, going on to find meaningful employment.
Part of the 2022 Career Start cohort, Kristen graduated with a Bachelor’s in Social Work, but struggled to break into the field.
Her vision condition, retinopathy of prematurity, has impacted her ability to travel independently, and she requires magnification software to work effectively.
As a result, she was met with barriers when she sought to enter the workforce.
Vision Australia’s Career Start program was her solution.
Not only has it helped her get her foot in the door, but it has also provided her with skills and experience for the future.
“As a volunteer, I learned about the program from a Vision Australia colleague,” Kristen said.
“I was encouraged to apply.”
Kristen has been a member of Vision Australia’s Service Connect team since July 2022, where she’s gained experience with client intake and referral.
In the process, Kristen has learned to engage with clients, to conduct client risk assessments, and acquired workplace skills including an ability to write case notes, and to use assistive technology to meet her goals.
“I’m more confident in myself, and with assistive technology.”
Part of Career Start’s 12-month program involves a three-month placement with an external employer, where Kristen hopes to apply her skills to assist others.
“I have a drive and passion to help those in need, and to give back to the community.”
Applications for the Career Start program are open now until May 12.
