In 2017, Gift was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa. Since then, his vision has deteriorated significantly.
“It’s been a very challenging adjustment,” Gift said.
It was an adjustment that also required a career change.
No longer able to continue his previous work in the retail sector, Gift began studying in 2019, and by 2021, he’d completed a Diploma in Community Services.
He applied for Vision Australia’s Career Start program a year later.
“I learned about the Career Start program through Vision Australia’s Employment Services,” Gift said.
“I thought it would be a great opportunity to gain invaluable workplace skills and to help prepare me to re-enter the workforce.”
In his time as a Career Start graduate, Gift has been part of Vision Australia's client services team, supporting frontline staff who provides services to clients.
Since 2015, Vision Australia’s Career Start program has been providing blind and low vision graduates with the skills and experience to confidently enter the workforce.
The program involves nine months of employment with Vision Australia in a field that complements a participant’s qualifications and career aspirations, followed by a three-month placement with an external employer.
For Gift, participating in the Career Start program has been the first step towards reaching his goal of starting his own business.
“It’s a great program to develop your skills,” Gift said.
“I have learned some new computer programs, and to create and deliver recreational programs. I’ve also had the opportunity to further my administration skills,” Gift said.
Accompanied by his new Seeing Eye Dog, Ralph, Gift is now preparing for his three-month external placement.
“I would highly encourage anyone to have a go and apply.”
Applications for the Career Start program are open now until May 12.
More information about the program can be found on the Vision Australia website.
